Pioneer Ranching Crafts Day
Dust off your boots and round up the kiddies for the Museum’s Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day. The Museum presents Pioneer and Ranching Crafts Day to preserve and present these traditional crafts and give visitors a better understanding of those who came before us.
Event Demonstrators
Local artisans and craftsmen, some of them as far away as Canada will demonstrate traditional crafts that were an integral part of South Texas life centuries ago. Now considered folk-art, these crafts were once a necessity on the South Texas frontier.
Presenters will be many and varied, from wood carvers to soap makers, flint knappers to doll makers, furniture caners and hooked rug makers to hatband makers and horse hair braiders.
Horseshoe crafting, iron working, leatherworking, and needle arts were part of everyday life for ranching families on the South Texas frontier. Other presenters will demonstrate candlewicking, knitting, rock painting, spinning, weaving, rug braiding and more.
Visitors can expect to see event favorites like Leo Lopez and the Perdomo Family. Lopez intrigues visitors every year with his demonstration of ancient Indian crafting in his authentic teepee. The Perdomo family generated quite a buzz throughout Texas when they began weaving at the event 4 years ago. An impressive sight, the family has perfected the ancient art of weaving, by spinning wool into yarn using spindles and looms.
South Texas Cuisine
No event would be complete without traditional cuisine! Emmanuel's Catering will prepare mouthwatering gorditas, sopes, and chalupas to quiet any rumbly tummy. The Mexican delicacies can be washed down with tropical flavored aguas frescas, a refreshing juice made directly from the fruits like mango, tamarindo, and melon.
