WILL LOONEY LEGACY PARK

The Will Looney Legacy Park not only enhances the view of the 1910 county jail building, a Texas State Historic Landmark, but also serves as an extension of MOSTHistory’s educational offerings.

In 2007, the long-awaited opportunity to purchase the gas station property adjacent to the museum campus arrived. And, thanks to a very special gift from the Cullen and Carol Lynn Looney family, in combination with the Will Looney Memorial Fund, MOSTHistory was able to purchase the property, demolish the building and remove the underground gas tanks.

In appreciation and consideration of the generous gift, the Board of Trustees voted to create an educational park area to be named the Will Looney Legacy Park in memory of the Looney’s son, an outstanding young man who tragically lost his life in a car accident.

The Will Looney Legacy Park not only enhances the view of the 1910 county jail building, a Texas State Historic Landmark, but also serves as an extension of MOSTHistory’s educational offerings. As a result of the Phase I construction, visitors can meander through native landscaping along a walkway criss-crossed with trails of native animal footprints. Circular, paved areas create a series of spaces for present and future learning stations. A striking bronze sculpture entitled, A Texas Legacy, a wooden windmill and water tank, and a traditional leña fence formed by stacking mesquite logs are among the educational elements currently featured in the park.

In addition to the gift from the Looney Family and the Will Looney Memorial Fund, contributions from others friends combined to complete the funding for Phase I. Phase II of the Park’s development will expand the current educational activities and create an outdoor exhibit called the Legacy of the Land. Donations are being sought and accepted to fund Phase II.
